The Importance Of Restoring Decayed Teeth With Fillings

If you have a cavity, a filling is the best way to restore your tooth and get peace of mind. Without a filling, your cavity may get worse, and your tooth may eventually become infected. If that happens, you will require treatment with root canal therapy and a dental crown.

But with a filling, you can stop the decay right away, and save time and money by avoiding the need for treatments like root canals. You can also get rid of the pain, discomfort, and sensitivity caused by your cavity, and get back to your day-to-day routine.

So if you think that you might have a cavity, don’t wait. The best thing to do is to contact the team at The Good Dentist right away to get an oral exam from one of our doctors, and see if a filling is the best option for treating your cavity.

Understanding Composite/Tooth-Colored Fillings

Composite fillings, which are also called “tooth-colored” fillings, are our preferred method of restoring decayed teeth at The Good Dentist. This type of filling is made out of a special type of dental resin, which is blended with crushed glass to improve its durability.

This is in contrast to traditional metal fillings, which are made from metals like silver, tin, mercury, and copper. Compared to metal fillings, which have a silver-gray appearance, composite fillings look and feel much more natCompoural, since they are matched to the color of your teeth.

In addition to this, composite fillings usually require the removal of less enamel during the filling preparation process, and they bond very tightly to your tooth, providing a strong hold. For these reasons, our doctors prefer this method of cavity restoration at The Good Dentist.

What To Expect From The Filling Process

The process of getting a filling is minimally-invasive, and usually takes only about 30-60 minutes. Your doctor will start by cleaning your mouth and cleaning the treatment area. You can also be sedated during this process, if you want.

Then, your dentist will begin the process of filling your tooth. They will use a dental drill to remove decayed and damaged enamel from the tooth’s surface. Then, the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned to prepare for the filling.

Next, composite resin will be applied directly into the cavity layer-by-layer to rebuild the structure of the tooth. Each layer will be hardened with a UV light, cementing it in place.

Once the tooth has been filled, your dentist will use a dental drill to further refine the shape of the filling and make sure that it fits perfectly with the surrounding teeth. Your bite will be checked to ensure that the fit of your filling is perfect. If everything looks good, your filling will be polished one final time, and you’ll be sent home.
