Partial vs. Full Dentures

There are two different types of dentures that are used to replace missing teeth. Partial dentures are recommended if you are missing one or more teeth, but your mouth is in good condition and your remaining healthy teeth are strong. This prosthetic consists of one or more false teeth that are attached to a plastic and metal base. The dentures clip onto your remaining healthy teeth. This holds them securely in place and helps prevent the dentures from shifting when you eat, chew, or speak.

Full dentures are a bit different. These dentures are only recommended if you have lost most or all of your teeth from the upper, lower, or both arches of your teeth. This is because full dentures are designed to fit onto your gums perfectly, and are held in place by friction.

Any remaining teeth will just get in the way, and must be extracted before the treatment begins, even if they’re healthy. For this reason, our doctors will only recommend full dentures if your mouth has been seriously affected by advanced tooth decay, severe gum disease, or a major traumatic dental injury.
