There are two different types of dentures that are used to replace missing teeth. Partial dentures are recommended if you are missing one or more teeth, but your mouth is in good condition and your remaining healthy teeth are strong. This prosthetic consists of one or more false teeth that are attached to a plastic and metal base. The dentures clip onto your remaining healthy teeth. This holds them securely in place and helps prevent the dentures from shifting when you eat, chew, or speak.
Full dentures are a bit different. These dentures are only recommended if you have lost most or all of your teeth from the upper, lower, or both arches of your teeth. This is because full dentures are designed to fit onto your gums perfectly, and are held in place by friction.
Any remaining teeth will just get in the way, and must be extracted before the treatment begins, even if they’re healthy. For this reason, our doctors will only recommend full dentures if your mouth has been seriously affected by advanced tooth decay, severe gum disease, or a major traumatic dental injury.
The biggest benefit of dentures is that they restore your smile, your bite, and your self-confidence. You can smile brightly, speak with confidence, and eat your favorite foods after tooth loss.
Compared to other methods of smile restoration, dentures also have some other unique benefits. First, they’re very affordable, and typically are cheaper than both dental implants and dental bridges. They are also almost always covered by dental insurance, making dentures a good choice for tooth restoration if you’re on a budget.
You can also restore your mouth quickly. It usually will only take between 2-4 weeks to fit, prepare, and build a set of dentures at The Good Dentist. This is similar to the time it takes to get a dental bridge, but is much faster than treatment with a dental implant, which takes 3-6 months or longer.
Just about any dental patient can get dentures if they are missing one or more teeth. To find out if you are a good candidate for dentures, come to The Good Dentist right away.
Depending on your oral health, budget, and preferences, our doctors may recommend either full or partial dentures. You’ll also discuss alternative methods of tooth restoration that may be a better option, in some cases, such as dental bridges or dental implants.
